In Oia Santorini, we noticed a small sign while walking along one of the picturesque, narrow sidewalks. It pointed to Pelekanos, (in English “Pelican”) an upstairs bar/restaurant. It does not look like a restaurant from the entrance. Since it was lunchtime, we went upstairs and discovered a perfect setting on the top floor, open-air seating, an overhead trellis casting shade, gentle breezes, lilting soft jazz background music, and a stunning view in every direction, especially west overlooking the caldera (water-filled former volcano center).
Pelekanos rooftop setting was perfect. It wasn’t very crowded during lunchtime. We sat down along the rail to get the best view of the cliffs and Aegean Sea. The glass enclosure along the tables allows you to enjoy the view and shields the wind.
Everything on the menu looked delicious. The waitress suggested I try the grilled chicken, and my husband went with one of their signature dishes “octopus”. Portions were generous, too. Spectacular views all round the terrace, and very attentive staff.
Signature dishes: “Baby octopus appetizer with sweet chilly sause, smoked local fava (yellow split pea pure), fried capers and wild greens”, “Pork tenderloin with sour cherry sauce and mastic gum foam”, “Fresh lobster risotto with two types of asparagus”.
The wine cellar of the Pelekanos Restaurant in Oia, Santorini includes a wide variety of wines from all over Greece and the local Santorinian wines.
Pelekanos offers Greek and Mediterranean Cuisine. This is where you want to be for the Oia sunset! It’s very popular in the evening for dinner, so it’s best to book ahead for reservations.
