The nearest and most convenient gateway is Santorini International Airport (JTR), just a quick 35-minute high-speed ferry ride away. You can also fly into Mykonos, with ferry connections taking approximately 1 to 2 hours, or into Athens, where ferries from Piraeus Port reach Ios in about 4 to 6 hours depending on the route. It’s an intimate, authentic experience that connects you to the rhythms of Ios’ past.
From there, take a short drive or hike to Palaiokastro, the ruins of a 14th-century Venetian fortress dramatically perched atop a hill on the island’s eastern side —an ideal blend of history and scenery.
Afternoon: Gaitis-Simossi Museum & Odyseas Elytis Amphitheater
Next, head back toward Chora to explore Ios’ artistic soul. The Gaitis-Simossi Museum features the surreal and symbolic work of Yannis Gaitis alongside contemporary pieces by Gabriella Simossi, housed in a beautifully restored neoclassical school building. Before dinner, visit Agia Eirini Church, located near the port—a beautiful waterfront chapel dedicated to Saint Irene. We were fortunate to visit during the May 6th celebrations in her honor, where locals gathered with food, music, and dancing. In true Greek fashion, we were warmly invited to join—a spontaneous, joyful reminder of Ios’ deep-rooted hospitality.
Dine at Enigma, a traditional waterfront restaurant run by Stelios Nikolaus and proudly known as the oldest restaurant in Ios Port. Serving inventive Greek cuisine with a strong focus on fresh seafood and seasonal ingredients, Enigma combines heritage with creativity. Day 3: Myth, Seascapes & Villa Serenity
