I have lived away from home for the better part of the last 18 years, since leaving for college. In 2003, we had our yearly family Christmas dinner. I didn’t receive a specific gift, however shortly after that my paternal grandmother passed away. Without knowing it, that meal was one of the last that we enjoyed a full family. Since then my cousin passed around the same time. So, while I didn’t receive a specific gift from a family member or friend, I see Christmas 2003 as the last gift the universe gave our family, to be able to have our matriarch there with us. That to me is more than any other gift I could ask for.
Carmen
Hi Sylvia,
Thanks for sharing your heartfelt story, I understand completely how you feel. I lost my grandmother two years ago and not one day goes by that I don’t think of her. She was my mentor, and someone I looked up too after my dad passed away some 20 years ago after the holidays. I wish you and your family a Happy Holiday!
Jessi
That’s a tough one, but I think the most thoughtful and appreciated holiday gift I receive is an opportunity to fly home and visit my family. With all the other traveling I do, it isn’t always feasible, financially, but my parents have paid for my flights the last few years as a Christmas present, allowing us all to be together on the holidays.
As for best gift I’ve ever given…my brother is a huge history buff, and is particularly interested in the World Wars and the Cold War, so last year I gave him a piece of the Berlin Wall. Beyond that, I typically favor personalized gifts. Photo books and the sort.
Carmen
Hi Jessi,
Wow, you give your brother a piece of the Berlin Wall, he most of been over the moon. We normally take off for the holidays. This is the first time in seven years that we have been home for the holidays. I now believe it was a sign, because my mother in law fell and broke her hip over the weekend. We would of been along ways away if we had traveled. Like they say, things happen for a reason. Enjoy your holidays!

This would have to be the last Christmas I was able to spend with my Mother. All of her children and most of her grandchildren went to Michigan for a Christmas surprise, no gifts just love Best Christmas ever!
Carmen
Hi Kathy,
That must of been a wonderful surprise for your mom to have everyone there. It’s a great memory to cherish forever. Thanks for sharing! Happy Holidays and A Happy New Years to you and your family.
Sandy
This has to be the birth of my grandson. He was born one week before Christmas. In the year following his mother had cysts on her ovaries and can no longer have children. He is our Christmas blessing.
Carmen
Hi Sandy,
That’s a wonderful gift! It’s also a wonderful time to celebrate a birthday. I know mine is a week after Christmas, (New Years Eve baby). Happy Holidays to you and the family!
Jeff
Love this website!
So proud of you Carmen!!!
Carmen
Thank Jeff,
I know what your best gift was for Christmas. Your home was remodeled this year! Merry Christmas!!
Lauren
This is going to sound REALLY cheesy but the first time that Justin told me that he loved me was on Christmas when we celebrated our first Christmas together. That was a really special moment for me and even though we exchanged gifts and all of that, that was the most special Christmas present for me 🙂
Carmen
Hi Lauren,
It’s not cheesy at all, that was very romantic of him. I hope you said you loved him back, (just kidding)! Merry Christmas to you both and a Happy New Year!
Jolanta aka Casual Traveler
My sister, who still lives in Poland, asked us to buy an iPhone for her husband when we were going home for Christmas, because they cost twice as much in Poland as in the U.S. She was expecting to reimburse us, but we told her that’s fine, it’s our gift from us, since we don’t see each other every year. She was very happy to hear that, but said she’d be jealous of her husband for having a brand new smartphone, while at that time she still had a regular flip phone. She was really happy when she saw a little box for herself as well under the tree! She did not expect that, but I couldn’t give an iphone to her husband and not to her.
Carmen
Hi Jolanta,
That’s a great story! It sounds like they have a wonderful Christmas that year thanks to you guys. I usually bring our hand me down iPhone’s to the family is Europe. They are happy to get whatever model they can get. Have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!
Bec
The last year when my daughter presented me with beautiful, healthy prefect twin grandaughters, to make (and hopefully finalise !!) her growing family of 4 children under 4.
Carmen
Hi Bec,
Wow, That’s a handful to have four kids under the age of four. It certainly will keep everyone busy for the holidays. Have a wonderful holiday and Happy New Year!
Claudia
