I love to indulge in the finer things when I travel, and Carmen’s site has been instrumental in tipping me off to places such as the Mardan Palace Hotel in Antalya (oh my word was that a lovely place to stay). I can’t say enough good things about this site, so I’m really please to be featured here!
I’ve explored a lot of different travel styles over my years of navigating the globe, but of course, nothing beats luxury travel! It used to be that if you wanted to plan the trip of a lifetime, you had to shell out extra bucks to have a travel agent arrange everything for you, but fortunately that’s no longer the case—so you can spend more money on the fun parts of the trip itself, rather than on all the logistics of it! With a smartphone in your hand, you can have a fabulous trip whipped up in no time, including everything from airfare to accommodations to dinner reservations and more.
Here are seven apps that you shouldn’t be without:
For those tired of cramped commercial airlines and their ridiculous fees, there’s a solution: book your seats on a private jet! The app is designed to allow you to find jets all around the world that are going your way, and since it’s becoming more popular, you’ll have access to an increasingly large number of routes. But of course, not all travel is done in the sky. If you’re looking for yachts or other sailing experiences, GetMyBoat is your best bet.
Sick of spending hours pouring over other people’s itineraries? This app will make recommendations based on the things you like and the way you like to travel, and if you sign up as a member, they can even put together an itinerary that’s custom-fit for you. They really have a knack for coming up with unique ideas too! They’ll help you turn an ordinary trip into something tailor-made and just for you.
I’ve never been a fan of impersonal hotel rooms, especially not for a long trip. Although higher-end places offer plenty of amenities, I can never quite get comfortable in a place that doesn’t feel very homely. AirBnB has solved this issue for me by allowing me to stay in someone else’s apartment or home for the duration of my stay (often for cheaper than that expensive hotel room anyway). AirBnB rentals really range from budget-friendly to luxury options. You can even stay in amazing places like a villa in Tuscany or a stunningly tranquil Kenya retreat.
Gone are the days of lugging around that huge stack of flight, hotel and tour confirmations, but that doesn’t mean I want to spend forever searching through my email to try to find my documents either! The way I look at it, you could either create an entirely new email account for just your trip confirmations (more trouble than it’s worth) or just download the TripIt app, which will pull information from you confirmation emails (as well as any other information you manually enter) to put together a day-by-day itinerary for you. This includes all your confirmation numbers and other information that you might need. It has definitely simplified my travel in so many ways.
In my opinion, food is one of the best parts of any trip, so I don’t want to waste my time and appetite in poor-quality restaurants that offer little variety! Instead, I use Zagat to find some of the best-rated dining experiences around, which are oftentimes recommended by locals as well as travelers. I especially like how easy it is to make reservations and recommend restaurants; it really makes every part of my dining experience a breeze!
Chances are you wouldn’t book accommodation without WiFi, but unfortunately, not all WiFi networks are safe, and the more public they are, the less safe they become. The last thing you want is for your trip to be spoiled because someone hacked your bank account while traveling—but that’s a very real possibility if you don’t take the steps to protect your passwords and other sensitive information via encryption. A Virtual Private Network will hide your web traffic where hackers can’t access it so that you can send those emails to your friends and family without worrying about what private information you might unknowingly be sending out into the world.
Wondering how you’re going to get around to all the places on your itinerary without renting a car? You could take a generic taxi, but we recommend an Uber. The LUX selection in the popular app allows you to find cars that are more spacious and offer amenities such as water bottles and magazines. You can reserve taxis from hundreds of different places around the world, and really it’s nearly always the simplest way to get from Point A to Point B, especially if you’re looking for comfort.
Having a smartphone and using it wisely can turn the hassles of travel into an effortless affair. All you need are the right apps and you can be well on your way to planning the trip of your dreams. Although this is, of course, not an exhaustive list of all the wonderful travel apps that are out there, these are some of my personal favorites when it comes to planning a luxury trip. Do you agree? What other apps might you add to this list?
