6 Ways to Enjoy Theater at Home During Quarantine

ARTS, LIFESTYLE, TRAVEL

As of June 2020, Broadway has extended its closure through the rest of the year, along with many other theaters around the world. There’s nothing quite like experiencing the thrill of live theater on stage, however, we have to choose safety right now above all else. But for those who love live theater and travel often to see incredible performances, there are still ways to enjoy yourself while at home during lockdown!

#1 Broadway HD

Like Netflix, Broadway HD is an amazing streaming service for theater fans! Similar to other streaming services, you pay a monthly fee but can also test it out for free in the beginning. There are hundreds of musicals and plays available to enjoy from the comfort of your own home. Don’t expect new musicals that are currently in theaters, such as Hamilton or Dear Evan Hansen to be on there. However, they are always adding new things so those might come in time.

There are still several popular shows on here to enjoy like Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, Kinky Boots, and so much more. Even after lockdown is over, Broadway HD is the best option to enjoy theater when you’re not able to in person!

#2 Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Best Musicals

Andrew Lloyd Webber is a world famous composer who’s created masterpieces in musical theater such as Cats, Evita, Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, School of Rock and so much more. During quarantine, he believes that the show must still go on!

And so, he’s collaborating with Universal on the new Youtube Channel ‘The Show Must Go On’ which will be streaming full-length musicals every Friday at 7 pm BST (British Summer time), or 2 pm EDT (Eastern Daylight Time). These musicals will stay up on the channel for 48 hours, along with clips that will stay up permanently. Andrew Lloyd Webber has also been very active across his social media platforms by playing his famous show tunes on his piano.

#3 Calling all Fleabag fans!

If you’re a fan of the hit Amazon Prime Show ‘Fleabag’ starring the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge, then this is the website for you. Fleabag started out as a one-woman show, written and performed by Phoebe, on stage in cities like London and New York City. Luckily, they filmed a performance and it’s now available to rent through Soho Theatre On Demand.

There are different donation prices you can pay for a rental of this epic stage performance. The money will go towards a few charities supporting not only medical workers but also actors who are currently out of work. That’s what I call a win-win! Keep in mind, there are several other performances you can watch through Soho Theatre as well.

#4 The Metropolitan Opera

The Met is offering ‘Nightly Opera Streams’ and the current streaming schedule will include some of the biggest hits from recent seasons, like Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.

These classic performances will be streamed at 7:30 pm (EDT) on the Met’s homepage and will remain available to watch for 20 hours. While these are free to watch, viewers can donate money to their urgent fundraising campaign to support the Met during this difficult time.

#5 The Globe Theatre

I have fond memories of visiting the beautiful Globe Theatre in London to enjoy a live Shakespeare performance. While this theater is closed for now, you can still enjoy your favorite Shakespearean plays thanks to the Globe Player.

Thankfully, the Globe has over 70 pre-recorded tapings from their past plays. Some popular ones included ’Twelfth Night’ with Stephen Fry and a female-led production of Hamlet. These aren’t free, but you can pay to rent or own certain performances for a cost that’s usually cheaper than other websites like Amazon. Plus, you’ll be directly supporting the Globe.

#6 Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+

If you already have Netflix and/or an Amazon Prime account, you are also in luck! There are several movie musicals available on both of these streaming platforms to enjoy right now.

Netflix, in the United States, currently offers Jersey Boys, Springsteen on Broadway, Shrek the Musical, American Son, Sweeney Todd, Mary Poppins Returns and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Amazon Prime users can enjoy a selection of musicals on Prime Video, including Carousel, Fiddler on the Roof, Hamilton: One Shot to Broadway, King Lear, Kiss Me Kate, and more.

Beginning July 3, 2020, Hamilton will be available to stream on Disney Plus. This is the most famous musical in the world, and now you can see the original cast performing on screen from the comfort of home!

Don’t Forget to Donate!

Lastly, please help and support if you can by donating to different relief funds for Broadway employees out of a job right now. We will need their talent after all of this is over to help lift our spirits. Find out how you can help here!

We’ve had Disney+ for awhile now in the U.S., and it’s absolutely wonderful, I agree! Maybe not so much in terms of theater, specifically, but we do highlight it in our recent article: carmensluxurytravel.com/8-ways-to-satisfy-your-wanderlust-at-home/

      Thanks for your lovely comment!

Even though my comment might be a little late, I think what’s talked about in your article is still applicable today honestly when it comes to the way our habits have changed in terms of our consumption of content. Lots of companies have went digital, more movies are streaming, and home theater in general has seen a renewed interest. I think it’s awesome that movie theaters have bounced back though since I think it’s possible both can do well.
