An Anniversary Ring Inspired by a Favourite Trip

BEAUTY + FASHION, LIFESTYLE

An anniversary trip can leave you with hundreds of photographs and one you keep going back to. Perhaps it is a courtyard where you stopped for lunch, with green tiles behind the table. You can almost remember how cool it felt after the heat of the street.

If you are thinking about an anniversary ring, start there. A particular colour can give the choice a personal connection, without needing to reproduce a whole destination in miniature. And the ring need not be waiting in a box before you leave. Choosing it afterwards can be part of the pleasure.

Find the Detail You Keep Looking at

Go back through your own pictures before searching for jewellery. Crop one to the part that interests you: the tiles, a stretch of blue water or the pink wall outside your room. Describe what you like about it. Is the colour pale and misty, or deep and clear?

The inspiration need not come from the landscape. The art-filled interiors of Le Negresco in Nice offer a reminder of how much a hotel itself can contribute to a trip. Your favourite detail might be a painting you passed each morning on the way to breakfast.

Give that Colour a Shape

Start with the green that caught your eye in the courtyard. Lily Arkwright’s three-stone gemstone settings include the yellow-gold Louella, with an oval lab-grown emerald between two smaller round lab-grown diamonds. The diamonds frame the green without forming a continuous border.

Round side stones keep the outline curved; pointed accents would give it more taper. Do you enjoy that framing, or would you rather see one coloured stone on a plain band? Three stones can be a design preference without needing a story assigned to each one.

A ring described as an engagement ring can mark an anniversary too. Decide which finger you would like to wear it on, then have that finger measured. If it will sit beside another ring, take that along when you try designs.

Use the Photograph to Start a Conversation

“The green of these tiles, with a little blue in it” tells a jeweller more than “something that reminds us of Italy”. Bring the picture, but be open to a colour you like on your hand even if it is not an exact match.

GIA’s emerald colour guidance distinguishes hue, tone and saturation. For your courtyard photograph, that means asking whether the green has the blue note you remember, and whether you want it lighter or deeper. Compare a couple of actual stones so you can point to the difference.

If you can view the ring in person, look at it in daylight and ordinary indoor light where possible. Shopping online? Ask for a short video of the actual stone and find out what light it was filmed in. Then put your holiday picture aside for a moment. Would you still enjoy the ring without the comparison beside it?

Let the Shopping Wait Until You Are Home

A lovely shop on the last afternoon can be tempting, especially when the anniversary dinner is that evening. If you already know the jeweller and find exactly what you want, there may be no reason to wait. Otherwise, the flight home need not become your decision deadline.

You could spend part of the trip looking at colours together, then arrange a fitting once you return. Agree a separate amount for the ring, looking at the holiday costs alongside it before you settle on a budget.

Get the chosen stone, metal and any engraving included in a written quote. Before personalising the ring, ask about gemstone care, resizing and exchange terms.

Keep the Part that Only the Two of You Know

If the ring is a gift, the wearer can help choose it while the presentation remains a surprise. Print the photograph that started the search and write something specific on the back. “The lunch where we stayed until they started setting up for dinner” will mean more than a polished message about an unforgettable journey.

Keep a copy with the ring’s paperwork, too. Years later, it may be the quickest way to explain why you chose that particular green.

The first outing need not be another anniversary. Wear it to lunch on an ordinary weekend. Someone may compliment the stone and know nothing about the courtyard. Between the two of you, though, the conversation might go straight back to that table.
