Stay Smart When Traveling By Following These Simple Steps

Going travelling – whether it’s for a week, a month or even a year, is all about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, meeting new people, having new experiences and making incredible memories! There will be nothing more satisfying in the years to come then admiring your incredible collection of photographs, even if you just buy a cheap canvas to have your favorite picture blown up for everyone to see. You’ll have stories and anecdotes to reminisce about for years and lots of new friends to keep in touch with too… but nobody wants a poor traveling experience! And if you’re going on a big trip, then you’ll have to understand that sometimes things might go wrong, like a misplaced backpack, a stolen wallet or a lost phone to name a few.

So, what can you do to keep safe whilst you’re traveling? Well, we’ve compiled a list of helpful tips and handy advice that will hopefully keep your safe whilst abroad!

We’re often inspired by Hollywood movies that depict gorgeous people heading off into a foreign country, backpacking across a continent or hoping to find themselves on a road trip. However, they also manage to take off without telling anyone which is a huge mistake. The idea of heading off into the sunset without anyone knowing about your adventures sounds romantic, but it’s also pretty dangerous. You don’t have to give people an hour-by-hour itinerary of what you’re planning to do, but giving loved ones vital information such as the hotels you’ll be staying at, the planes you’re catching, the route you’re taking and what numbers/email addresses you can be reached is something we highly recommend. That way if something isn’t right, or something goes wrong, you can contact your family and vice versa. It’s just common sense and something that is very easy to do beforehand!

Don’t party too hard

We’re not trying to be a killjoy, but when you’re in a foreign country, surrounded by like-minded travelers or locals who are happily filling up your glass with cheap beer, you need to be able to know your limits and say no. Just like any bar anywhere in the world, never leave your glass unattended, don’t feel obliged to have a drink bought for you, don’t try to keep up with the locals and keep your wits about you.

Many travelers undertake a self-defense class before they head off, which might boost their confidence should they cross paths with a mugger. Be sensible and don’t put yourself in dangerous situations like walking back to your hotel down dark streets or alleyways. If you’re grabbed or groped, be sure to scream and make a scene if you can. If you’re attacked and have no choice but to fight back then go for the eyes, throat and groin. As soon as you can – run into a public place and ask for help.

Doing research before you travel is crucial. It’ll let you in on all the danger spots of your chosen city, the places to avoid and the customs that all travelers must adhere to in that part of the world. Make sure you know the laws of the land before you get there which will help towards a safer and more enjoyable travel experience!

Great tips! Any time I travel I always let me family, etc know where I am staying, when I arrive, etc. As far as drinking I agree that watching your cup and knowing to say no is very important.

All such great tips, Carmen! I’ve been traveling more and more and love it. I’m usually with my husband. I’ve been thinking of taking a self-defense class, though – even just for everyday life!
