My Top 6 Favorite French Fashion Brands

BEAUTY + FASHION, EUROPE, FRANCE, LIFESTYLE, LUXURY TRAVEL DESTINATIONS, TRAVEL

When it comes to timeless elegance, effortless chic, and impeccable craftsmanship, no country does it quite like France. French fashion is synonymous with luxury, sophistication, and a certain je ne sais quoi that has captivated the world for centuries. During my travels to Paris, I’ve had the chance to explore some of the finest French fashion brands, from heritage maisons to up-and-coming labels. Here are my top six favorite French fashion brands that perfectly encapsulate the magic of French style.

#1 Sézane

Founded by Morgane Sézalory in 2013, Sézane was the first French fashion brand to launch entirely online. What began as a vintage shop evolved into a beloved modern brand, renowned for its chic, Parisian-cool aesthetic. Sézane offers a variety of women’s clothing, shoes, accessories, and even homeware, all designed with sustainability and transparency in mind. Sézane is best known for its effortless, feminine pieces that combine vintage inspiration with modern cuts. Think flowing floral dresses, perfect blouses, and timeless denim.

The brand prides itself on producing high-quality, eco-conscious fashion, with most items crafted from organic cotton, recycled fabrics, and sustainable materials. It’s a brand that captures the spirit of French women, with pieces that transition seamlessly from a morning stroll by the Seine to a relaxed evening with friends. While Sézane started as an online-only store, it now has physical boutiques. The most famous is the Appartement Sézane in the 2nd arrondissement. This cozy, impeccably designed space is more than just a store—it feels like stepping into a friend’s chic Parisian apartment.

#2 Gerard Darel

Gerard Darel has been a household name in French fashion since 1971 when it was founded by Gérard and Danièle Darel. This brand is celebrated for its sophisticated and timeless designs. It became particularly famous when it acquired Jackie Kennedy’s iconic pearl necklace at auction, further cementing its association with classic elegance. In my opinion, they’re most known for their understated luxury such as minimalist coats, knitwear and leather handbags. In other words, Gerard Darel appeals to women who want quality and timeless pieces that transcend trends.

Their clothes are elegant but never overly flashy, often featuring clean lines, neutral palettes, and the occasional pop of color or playful detail. It’s a brand that champions wearable elegance, perfect for women who prioritize comfort without compromising on style. Gerard Darel is ideal for women seeking wardrobe staples that strike the balance between professional and casual. Their handbags, in particular, have a cult following, with designs that remain classic season after season. You can find Gerard Darel boutiques scattered across Paris, with a standout location on Rue Saint-Honoré in the 1st arrondissement.

#3 Maje

Maje was founded in 1998 by Judith Milgrom, and the brand has since become a go-to for those seeking trendy yet sophisticated fashion. Maje is part of the SMCP group, which also includes another popular French brand that I love, Sandro. With a focus on femininity and creativity, Maje is known for its stylish, on-trend pieces that often incorporate unique textures, bold prints, and tailored silhouettes. From statement outerwear to delicate dresses, Maje offers something for every occasion, with a flair for combining urban and bohemian influences.

It’s perfect for the modern Parisienne who loves to mix classic staples with statement pieces. Think leather jackets paired with romantic dresses or sharply tailored blazers over flowing skirts. Maje’s mix of contemporary and timeless designs makes it a versatile choice for those who want to stay ahead of fashion trends without sacrificing elegance. Maje’s flagship store is located on Rue de Passy in the 16th arrondissement, a chic shopping district in the heart of Paris. You can also find Maje boutiques in popular department stores like Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marché.

#4 Sandro

Sandro was founded in 1984 by Evelyne Chétrite, and it quickly gained recognition for its modern take on classic French fashion. It sits alongside Maje under the SMCP group but has a distinct, slightly androgynous aesthetic. I really admire their sleek tailoring, refined outerwear, and effortlessly cool Parisian street style. Sandro embodies the French It-Girl aesthetic—polished yet relaxed, with sharp blazers, chic knitwear, and stylish sneakers that blend high fashion with everyday wear. You can find their boutiques throughout Paris, including a beautiful flagship on Rue Vieille du Temple in the Marais, one of the trendiest shopping districts. Sandro is perfect for those who seek a stylish look with minimal effort, in other words, an elevated take on everyday fashion!

#5 Dior

No list of French fashion brands would be complete without Dior. Founded by Christian Dior in 1946, this iconic maison quickly revolutionized the fashion world with its debut collection, famously known as the “New Look.” Dior is a brand synonymous with luxury, elegance, and high fashion. The brand’s most iconic items include its Lady Dior handbag, the classic Bar jacket, and show-stopping evening gowns worn by Hollywood’s elite.

Dior’s style is defined by timeless glamour and femininity. The designs often highlight the female silhouette with cinched waists, voluminous skirts, and intricate detailing. While rooted in tradition, Dior’s modern collections, under the direction of Maria Grazia Chiuri, bring a fresh feminist perspective to the house’s storied legacy. Dior’s ability to blend history with modernity keeps it at the forefront of fashion. It’s a brand for women who want to feel powerful, glamorous, and unmistakably chic.

For the ultimate luxury shopping experience, visit the flagship Dior boutique on Avenue Montaigne. The store is an embodiment of the brand’s opulence, featuring everything from haute couture to exquisite accessories. This is also where I absolutely fell in love with Dior last year, which you can read all about here! It’s important to note that while stepping into a designer store can be intimidating for some, Dior has always made me feel very welcome and special. I absolutely love their customer service.

#6 Hermès

While it’s notoriously difficult to acquire their handbags, it’s impossible to deny that Hermès is the epitome of French luxury. Established in 1837 as a harness workshop by Thierry Hermès, the brand has since become one of the most prestigious names in fashion. Known for its impeccable craftsmanship and artisanal quality, Hermès remains family-owned and fiercely independent. Their designs are refined, understated, and meticulously crafted. Whether it’s a buttery soft leather handbag or an intricately printed silk scarf, Hermès pieces are made to be cherished for generations.

Hermès is most famous for its leather goods, particularly the Birkin and Kelly bags—coveted items with years-long waitlists. The brand also excels in silk scarves, equestrian accessories, and haute couture. Hermès stands out for its dedication to craftsmanship and exclusivity. It’s a brand that embodies true luxury with each item being a work of art, designed to be passed down from generation to generation. And I certainly plan on passing down my Hermès bags to my daughter!

The flagship Hermès boutique on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré is a must-visit for any fashion lover. This historic store offers a luxurious shopping experience, with the opportunity to explore the brand’s exquisite collections of fashion, home goods, and more. I had the best luck visiting the small Hermès boutique in Biarritz, France where I encountered lovely customer service.

From the effortlessly cool vibe of Sézane to the ultimate in luxury at Hermès, French fashion brands offer something for everyone. Whether you’re shopping for a classic handbag or a trendy new dress, these five brands are sure to infuse your wardrobe with a touch of Parisian elegance.
