5 Things To Consider When Buying A Yurt

LIFESTYLE, TRAVEL

Yurts, also called gers, were once exclusively used by the nomadic peoples of Central Asia for shelter and protection. Nowadays, they’re available in the market for use. Despite their size, yurts are collapsible. Hence, you can set up these temporary structures in spacious locations. Their portability and affordability are believed to have attracted many people worldwide to own modern versions for themselves. Generally, yurts aren’t as expensive as owning a traditional home. However, there are still factors you need to consider before purchasing one. Here’s a brief list of things you need to remember in preparation for getting your own yurt:

#1 Purpose

Yurts serve one primary purpose: to be a person or group’s temporary lodging. But some people opt to convert their yurts into permanent homes, replacing traditional ones. If not that, yurts can also serve as extensions of a house such as an outdoor office or studio. Some families may also set up yurts out of town to become their vacation cottage during holidays. Alternatively, others buy them to turn them into tourist accommodations, like luxury yurts for glamping rentals. Each of the yurt’s purposes will have similar yet different requirements, especially when you begin choosing where to set it up. Henceforth, you need to decide what you want your yurt to be used for, so you can move on to the next step.

#2 Location

If traditional homes need in-ground foundations, yurts need platforms. Typically, the platform comes with the yurt when you purchase it. So, you can put it practically anywhere, even on some slopes; but it’s not always the case. Before installing or building any large structure, you’ll need permits. It may be easier if you plan to set your yurt on a property you already own. You might already know the zoning requirements of your state. Otherwise, you must research these requirements first, especially if you intend to put the yurt in another location. If possible, choose a place where the zoning laws aren’t that strict.

When buying a rental yurt for vacationers or transient travelers, it’s best to choose a location that’s popular among tourists. You’ll have to consider the number of visitors the place receives too. It should also have accessible public amenities and enough space for the yurt. Once you’ve chosen a spot for your yurt, you can decide on its size and features.

#3 Design & Customization

Yurts come in various sizes and designs. You usually have the option to choose the color of the walls, too. Standard yurt sizes range from 28 square feet to as large as 429 square feet and have several features like:

  • Center ring;
  • Rafters;
  • Side and top cover;
  • Lattice wall;
  • A door and a dome;
  • Fabric windows;
  • Rain diverter; and
  • Tension cable.

Fortunately, most manufacturers allow customization for a small fee or otherwise. You can personalize your yurt depending on your tastes or a theme you’re going for a rental. You may also request upgrades whenever possible. So, for example, if you want more protection for your yurt during storms or winter, the manufacturer could provide the necessary enhancements to accommodate you. Your yurt’s size and design will determine what you’ll put inside and outside it. It’ll attract campers looking for comfortable and fuss-free accommodations for luxury travel.

#4 Amenities & Utilities

Tourists love yurts because these structures act like a home away from home. Unlike regular tents, yurts provide a level of comfort similar to a traditional dwelling. But they still emit vibes of the wild outdoors, appealing to many campers and travelers. Depending on size, you can add several pieces of furniture to your yurt. You’ll find many interior inspirations online and use those ideas to decide on the amenities. The basics of a luxury yurt will include electricity, a bed, dining and kitchen appliances, and a bathroom. Some models may also allow the installation of indoor plumbing and running water. The more domestic utilities it has, the more likely campers will want to stay in it for the duration of their trip.

Consider everything you want to put in your dream yurt. There’s nothing wrong with planning ahead and imagining what it would look like once it’s already set up. It’s an excellent exercise to practice before you invest in this trendy and homey structure.

#5 Cost

Yurts aren’t cheap, but they’re generally more affordable than a home or apartment. They make an excellent investment for those who want another income stream or to save money on mortgage or rent. Expect yurt prices to range from USD$27,000 to USD$44,000 more or less. The yurt itself is not only pricey. Any customizations you want to be done on it will have extra fees. If you want to buy a yurt, you have to prepare your funds. You can discuss it with the manufacturer to avail yourself of special deals or cheaper alternatives that fit your budget and payment method.

If you open your yurt for rentals and manage it well, you may get a significant return on your investment to make up for the cost of buying it. As long as you put it in a tourist destination, like a glamping site at a national park, you can earn back your capital to improve the yurt’s amenities. Future travelers will appreciate the extra comfort from it as well.

Lastly…

It’s exciting to have a yurt of your own to live in or to rent to campers. Setting it away from urban areas is like having a mini home in the middle of nature. But since it’s considered an investment, like a car or an actual house, you need to step back for a moment to appraise some factors. You may avoid mistakes and regrets this way and focus your energy on making a new dwelling for you or others to enjoy.
