The library was founded by Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone in 1895, who believed that books should be accessible to everyone. Today, Gladstone’s Library continues this legacy by providing a welcoming and inspiring space for readers and writers alike. Here are just a few reasons why you should book a stay at Gladstone’s Library…

With over 250,000 books, Gladstone’s Library boasts an impressive collection. The library is particularly strong in theology, history, and literature, but there are books on every subject imaginable. Staying at Gladstone’s Library gives you access to their reading rooms where you can work from a desk in peace, surrounded by beautiful books and natural light. This Victorian library is not only absolutely stunning (seriously, think Hogwarts), but also an inspiring place to work on a novel or any special project that requires deep thought and focus. There’s also nothing quite like curling up with a good book in a cozy library, and Gladstone’s Library provides the perfect setting for that.
In terms of where you can stay, Gladstone’s Library offers a range of accommodation options, from single rooms to family suites on a bed and breakfast basis. There are 26 bedrooms in total and each room is unique and named after a famous writer, adding to the library’s literary charm. The rooms are simple but very comfortable and cozy, providing a peaceful escape from the outside world. And since the library is located in a small village, you can expect absolute tranquility.

You’re also covered when it comes to breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in between. The library’s restaurant, Food for Thought, serves up delicious meals and snacks made from locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, making it a popular spot for guests and locals alike. And of course, there’s always the option of grabbing a book from the library and enjoying your meal with a great read. Always ask for the daily specials, I also highly recommend any of their soups and saving room for dessert. The lemon tart is my favorite!

Gladstone’s Library hosts a range of events throughout the year, including author talks, workshops, and concerts. These exciting occasions provide opportunities for guests to connect with like-minded individuals and learn something new. And if you’re lucky, you might even get to attend one of the library’s famous Gladfest literary festivals.

One of my favorite aspects of staying at Gladstone’s Library is where it’s located. Hawarden is a picturesque village in Wales located just 6 miles from the city of Chester (about a 2 hour train ride from London) . The village is home to an historic castle, beautiful green walks, and a handful of shops and pubs. It’s the perfect base for exploring North Wales and Cheshire, with plenty of hiking trails and scenic drives nearby. And speaking of pubs, there’s one in town that you must visit: The Glynne Arms. With over 200 years of history, this pub exudes charm and has the coziest atmosphere. Definitely stop by for their special Sunday Roast menu. I also recommend walking about a mile from the library to Hawarden State Farm Shop for afternoon tea or lunch.

Or if you don’t want to leave Gladstone’s, they also serve afternoon tea! And my favorite place to enjoy a warm drink and scone is in the Gladstone Room, a charming living room/lounge with oversized arm chairs, a roaring fire, plenty of books and board games as well. While talking isn’t permitted in the library’s main reading rooms, the Gladstone Room is the perfect place to converse with other guests.
Gladstone’s Library is a unique and inspiring place to stay for book lovers. With its impressive collection, cozy accommodation, delicious food, exciting events, and picturesque location, it will very easily become your favorite hidden gem in the United Kingdom. There is truly no place like it. So why not book a stay and experience the magic of Gladstone’s Library for yourself?
