Nestled in the heart of Belgium, Bruges is a perfectly preserved medieval city that will easily capture your heart. I recently visited in July and quickly fell in love with its charming canals, cobblestone streets, and historic architecture. We spent 48 hours in Bruges which is the perfect amount of time to see the best of this city. So if you’re planning a luxurious getaway to Bruges, keep reading to discover my top recommendations…
A Picturesque Canal Cruise
Prepare to be whisked away on a whimsical journey as you embark on a Bruges canal cruise. These serene waterways lace through the heart of the city, offering a unique perspective of Bruges’ architectural wonders along with expert narration. The cruise unveils a side of Bruges you simply can’t experience on foot. As you glide along the canals, you’ll catch glimpses of hidden gardens and graceful swans gliding by. It’s a serene escape that transports you back in time, and it’s an absolute must for those seeking a touch of magic. There are about half a dozen places you can board a canal cruise, and the routes and price are the same no matter where you get on (12 euros). The boats normally run every 15-20 minutes and last around a half hour. I highly recommend grabbing a seat in the very front of very back for the best unobstructed photos!
A Romantic Carriage Ride
Once you’ve admired Bruges from the water, I highly recommend getting on a horse-drawn carriage to keep exploring the city. This is a perfect option with your significant other for a romantic experience, or with any loved one who has mobility issues or even kids who are tired of walking. You can get on one of these carriages from the Market Square, a central location in Bruges with the most incredible architecture – some dating back to the 12th century! The cost of these carriages are set by the city, so you should not be paying more than 60 euros per half hour. Each carriage can fit up to 5 adults, but I would say it’s more comfortable with a maximum of 4. As you are gently carried through the city’s winding streets, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a different era. The city unfolds before you like a living storybook, and this leisurely ride offers an intimate way to take in the sights, making it an experience that ignites the spark of romance in even the most seasoned travelers.
Stay at the Luxurious Hotel Heritage
On my recent trip to Bruges, I had the pleasure of staying at the very charming and historic Hotel Heritage. As part of the renowned Relais & Châteaux hotel brand, it epitomizes refined elegance, exceptional service, and culinary excellence. Housed within a meticulously restored 19th-century mansion, this boutique hotel seamlessly blends historical grandeur with modern comforts. The architectural details, including ornate ceilings and period furnishings, pay homage to the hotel’s rich heritage, offering guests a unique and immersive experience. It is also perfectly located in the center of Bruges so you can easily walk everywhere. You can read my full review of this beautiful hotel here!
Climb the Belfry of Bruges
If you’re a fan of panoramic views and a bit of historical exploration, climbing the Belfry of Bruges is an adventure you won’t want to miss. This iconic bell tower stands tall in the heart of the city’s Market Square, offering a bird’s-eye view of Bruges’ captivating beauty. Amazingly, the belfry was built around 1240, when Bruges was an important centre of the Flemish cloth industry. After a devastating fire in 1280, the tower was largely rebuilt. As you ascend the tower’s winding staircase, you’ll catch glimpses of the intricate mechanisms that power its historic bells. The climb might challenge your legs with its 366 steps, but reaching the top is a reward in itself. The breathtaking vista of red-tiled roofs, winding streets, and enchanting canals stretches as far as the eye can see, etching a lasting memory of Bruges’ grandeur into your mind.
Eat Belgian Chocolate at Olivier’s (and other local restaurant gems…)
No trip to Belgium is complete without indulging in its world-renowned chocolates! And while there’s certainly no shortage of chocolate shops in Bruges, Olivier’s Chocolate Shop & Bar is one of our favorites. Here the art of chocolate-making comes to life. This charming establishment is a paradise for chocolate enthusiasts, offering an array of delectable treats that are as beautiful as they are delicious. You can sample and buy an an assortment of pralines, truffles, and imaginative creations that showcase the mastery of chocolatiers. You can even witness the chocolate-making process up close, allowing you to appreciate the skill and passion that goes into each delectable bite.
If you’re looking for more savory eats, the following restaurants are local gems in Bruges which I highly recommend dining at: Petit Patron for fondue, Brasserie Surplace for classic dishes like mussels, Orfeo for Italian food, and ‘t Poatersgat for drinks.
