A Journey Into the World of Sparkling Wine: The Best Champagne Cellars in France

Champagne bottles have very special storage requirements. For example, they must be protected from heat and light. In Champagne, this is ensured by the underground corridors of the legendary cellars, which house countless quantities of champagne bottles over several kilometers. Those visiting the region should not miss the opportunity to take a look inside one of the region’s best champagne cellars, whether in Épernay or Reims. The following article explains which ones they are and what makes them stand out.

The Taittinger Winery

The Maison Taittinger is located in Reims, on Place Saint-Nicaise to be precise. The remains of the 13th century monastery of the same name are still clearly visible today. A tour of this renowned winery is therefore an exciting journey back in time – at a depth of 18 meters. The characteristic white chalk quarries that can be admired here are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around 15 million bottles of champagne can be found in the Taittinger cellars, which are still produced with the knowledge that was once passed down by an extremely passionate family. This can be tasted with every sip during the subsequent tasting. Taittinger champagne is considered one of the most classic champagnes in the world. You can find out more about the brand here.

The Mercier Winery

The Mercier Winery offers visitors the chance to get to know part of its 18 kilometers of cellars. It is located 30 meters below Épernay’s chalk floor and can be easily reached by a small train. After the tour, you can also look forward to tasting the excellent champagne. The tour of the cellar also includes a huge barrel. The world’s largest barrel was commissioned by Eugène Mercier in the 19th century so that it could be displayed at the Paris World Exhibition in 1889.

The Moët & Chandon Winery

The Moët & Chandon winery is also located in Épernay and is one of the most prestigious champagne houses in the world. So it is hardly surprising that the Maison not only owns one of the largest vineyards in Champagne, but also the particularly extensive cellars. These consist of an unimaginable labyrinth that covers a total of 28 kilometers and is located directly below the Avenue de ChampagneThere are various guided tours to choose from. Participants can find out lots of exciting information about the world-famous champagne producer. The in-house boutique and, of course, the tasting rooms are also not to be missed.

The Mumm Winery

A white label adorned with a red ribbon: Most people have probably seen this at least once before. The Mumm Winery was founded in Reims in 1827 and has been producing one of the most legendary champagnes ever since. The “Expérience Cordon Rouge” is a museum tour that is primarily dedicated to the sense of smell. Visitors are taken seven to 14 meters down into the depths, where a small museum is located. Here, both the craft and the history of Mumm are on display. Of course, the crowning glory of the tour is a champagne tasting.
