Renting a boat while you are on vacation (or looking for something cool to do in your own backyard) recently received a facelift. It no longer means you are on a crowded, non-intimate commercial tour boat shoulder to shoulder with 15 strangers…now it’s more like heading out on the water with only your crew and pretending to own an awesome boat for a few hours, the day or even longer!
The sharing or “gig” economy, with the monumental success of giants like AirBnb and Uber, has spread its reach into all aspects of industry and the boating world is no exception. Boat sharing is the new trend taking the multi-billion dollar boating world by storm. Boating used to be exclusive to those with the financial means and desire to own a boat. Boat ownership, although personally rewarding to boating enthusiasts, was never considered to be fiscally beneficial.
All that has changed! Boat owners can now “list” their beautiful privately-owned boats for rent and boaters have gained access to the amazing fun of boating with no ownership required. And, the complete circle lies in the captain network. By including a network of Coast Guard-licensed captains to choose from, boat sharing has connects all the dots and created a world where boating is now at our fingertips.
Why Boat owners love boat sharing: Statistics show that the average boat owner heads out on the water only about 14 days each year. To list on a good quality boat sharing website is free and boat rentals through with the top companies come with end-to-end insurance and the owner retains control of the price and calendar. The money generated from the rentals can be pay for dockage, upgrades, routine maintenance and fuel.
Why boat captains love boat sharing: It’s their passion and now they can do it on their terms. Boat captains (in almost every case) love driving boats and being on the water…but not all like the rigors of being away from home for extended periods and being at the beck and call of the owner they work for. Boat sharing lets them set sail on their own career path and make their own rules.
Boat sharing is the way boating will become available to anyone and everyone. From the brunch group with no boating experience who want to kick it up a notch to the boat owner who is on vacation away from the boat…it’s the perfect way to make the ocean your playground! (It’ s been said that boating is the new “Dinner & Drinks”).
Now with Boatsetter renting a boat is as easy as choosing a boat in your location, opting for a captain (or deciding to be your own captain if you have relevant boating experience), and heading out into the wild blue yonder! (Epic sunsets? There’s no extra charge for those either!)
For all those interested in using Boatsetter for fishing, dining, cruising, sailing and more, please visit www.boatsetter.com and find the boat that is right for your needs.

June 4, 2016 at 5:48 pmI’ve heard the saying that the happiest day of a boat owner is the day they buy the boat and the day they sell it. I think renting it would take care of a lot of the headache that comes with owning a boat. You are flexible and can try different boats for different occasions. Sounds perfect to me 🙂

November 1, 2016 at 2:44 pmBoat sharing sounds like a great idea! I’ll have to look into it next time I am near a beach. I love going out on the water, but I don’t think I could ever keep up with the costs of owning my own boat. Thanks for sharing!

December 8, 2016 at 3:40 pmI live in a area with most of my neighbors have boats and never used them. They are always complaining that their boats are broken, and have to spend tons of money to keep them going. This was the perfect solution for us. We get to use a boat whenever we want and return it without the worries.
